DYNE PENS AND SOLUTIONS

Pillar Technologies, an ITW Company has been involved in the business of surface treatment or surface modification since 1966. Throughout this long and successful history, Pillar has acquired various areas of expertise of surface treatment within the industries of extrusion, printing, coating, and laminating. With this in mind, Pillar’s acquired application knowledge regarding surface treatment of various substrates that utilize various power density levels to correlate to specific dyne levels, all assist in determining “wettability” and in most cases adhesion characteristics of various substrates.

Typically used to determine the surface energy of a polyolefin substrate (e.g., polypropylene, polyethylene, etc.) after surface treatment, the surface energy measured in Dyne/cm (Dyne) or mN/m (Dyne) with either pens or solutions is one of industries accepted methods to determine the level of surface treatment the substrate has acquired to that of “wettability” (hydrophilic) or “non-wettability” (hydrophobic) properties. Typical in standard or atmospheric corona treatment, higher levels of Dyne levels (higher wettability) have related to higher or increased adhesion levels of water based inks, coatings and laminates. Ultimately the level required for your specific production needs is dependent upon many factors. Trial and error techniques along with actual adhesion comparisons matched to your specific substrate is generally the best method for long term reliable results.

In our continuing support of the surface treatment industry, Pillar Technologies, an ITW Company has made available a wide assortment of Dyne Solutions and Pens of varying dyne levels for use in testing primarily polyolefin substrate surface energy levels. All available dyne solutions and pens have been tested and verified to meet the ASTM 2578-84 standard and industry proven to be accurate to within 1 dyne/cm when properly applied by the user.

Pillar Technologies maintains a continuous inventory of both Dyne Solutions and Pens based on the most widely used Dyne levels. Expiration of the pens are based on usage, but one can generally expect to replace within six months of initial use or if contaminated prior to this time. Solutions can last a bit longer (maybe up to one year), but again are dependent upon contamination and number of times the 100ml bottle of solution may have been opened and closed.

Shipment is typically no more than 3-5 days from receipt of order with payment terms being determined based upon credit application review. Dyne Pen/Solution Order Forms are available upon request.

For the purpose of surface energy evaluation, the Pillar Technologies/Sherman Treater™ Dyne Solutions and pens are offered in a variety of ink colors and volume sizes.

When using dyne pens the operator simply swipes the felt tipped pen (or clean swab in the case of solutions) along the surface of the polyolefin material allowing for a streak of colored ink. Watching carefully the formation of the ink over a period of no more than four seconds determines whether or not the surface tension of the given polyolefin is at the surface energy of the specific level dyne solution or pen used. In other words, if the applied dyne ink “beads-up” or “pulls-in” within the four seconds then the material is not at this level of surface energy as provided with the specific dyne/cm solution or pen, indicating the level of surface treatment may not be adequate to meet your specific production needs.

“Quick-Test” Pen: Availability of 38 Dyne/cm (mN/m)

NOTICE: CONTAINS “FLAMMABLE” SOLUTION

The Pillar Technologies/Sherman Treater™ prefilled “quick test” dyne pen is available in a bright red ink color. This exclusive 38 Dyne/cm pen dries within three seconds after application, allowing both the operator and/or quality assurance department the ability to view the dried ink in such a form that will identify if the polyolefin material has met a minimum surface energy requirement of 38 dyne/cm.

NOTICE: This particular pen dries quickly due to the fact that it contains ethanol as part of the dyne ink mixture. Because of the ethanol within the dyne ink mixture of this particular “quick-test” pen, shipments of this product must meet certain requirements as identified by the International Air Transport Authority (IATA), International Maritime Dangerous Goods Code (IMDG), and the Code of Federal Regulations, Title 49 (49CFR) specifically for shipments within the United States.

Available in a magenta or fuchsia color, these prefilled Dyne pens do not typically dry easily; it may be necessary to wipe clean the surface of the substrate material after determining the surface energy level. Viewing of the applied ink within four seconds after application determines the surface energy level of the polyolefin or substrate.

“JUMBO” Pen: Availability of 36 – 50 Dyne/cm (mN/m)

Available in 2 Dyne/cm increments

Available in a blue color, these available Jumbo dyne pens do not typically dry easily; it may be necessary to wipe clean the surface of the substrate material after determining the surface energy level.  Viewing of the applied ink within four seconds after application determines the surface energy level of the polyolefin or substrate.

This empty pen comes complete with container chamber, felt tip, felt tip guide, and spring assembly.  Customer fills empty chamber with specific dyne solution as listed below and assembles to allow this large or “jumbo” pen to be used for specific surface energy check.

DYNE SOLUTIONS

Dyne Ink Solutions: Availability of 31 – 71 Dyne/cm (mN/m)

Available in 1 Dyne/cm increments

Ink solutions are available in 100ml plastic bottles with the ink coming in a blue color.  Using the solutions is a little different than the pens; one must use a clean cotton swab every time the solution is taken out of the bottle and applied to the substrate.  If a new swab is not used every time certain contamination can occur from within the bottle from which the specific dyne solution was removed.  For this reason swabs are also sold with these kits.  As required with Dyne pens, viewing of the applied ink within four seconds after application determines the surface energy level of the polyolefin or substrate.  These available solutions do not typically dry easily; it may be necessary to wipe clean the surface of the substrate material after determination of the surface energy level.
